- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp thyme (fresh or dried)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a skillet, caramelize onions in butter over medium-low heat until golden, about 20 minutes. Remove and set aside.
- Mix beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, and half the caramelized onions; form into 8–10 meatballs.
- Sear meatballs in the same skillet until browned on all sides.
- Add remaining onions, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce; simmer 10 minutes.
- Sprinkle cheese over the meatballs and broil until melted and bubbly.
- Garnish with thyme and serve with crusty bread or mashed potatoes.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use homemade beef broth.
- Feel free to substitute the Gruyère cheese with Swiss cheese if preferred.
- Serve with a side of crusty bread to soak up the gravy.
