Description

Juicy, cheesy meatballs bathed in caramelized onion gravy — comfort food elegance in one skillet.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp thyme (fresh or dried)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, caramelize onions in butter over medium-low heat until golden, about 20 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  2. Mix beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, and half the caramelized onions; form into 8–10 meatballs.
  3. Sear meatballs in the same skillet until browned on all sides.
  4. Add remaining onions, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce; simmer 10 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle cheese over the meatballs and broil until melted and bubbly.
  6. Garnish with thyme and serve with crusty bread or mashed potatoes.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use homemade beef broth.
  • Feel free to substitute the Gruyère cheese with Swiss cheese if preferred.
  • Serve with a side of crusty bread to soak up the gravy.
